Do political surveys reflect the will of the people?

In the TV series Numb3rs, the brother of an FBI agent -a mathematician from a university -is used as a consultant -to solve crimes – to predict the actions of the criminal, or to map out the area of his safe zone during his crimes or his victims, And it takes a lot of factors in order the proper equation to work. Time, place, acceleration, speed, frequency, and such. And this is needed to predict or trapped a criminal in his next move.

In a game of chess – besides being proficient with your defense and offense strategies -one must know the habits and favorite strategies of the opponent -and his favorite teachers -current or historical. Using both his imagination and logical and mathematical intelligence -one can beat his opponent – 2 or 3 steps or more ahead of the actual game. There are many Ai machines created to simulate the inner workings of humans’ minds -to beat the greatest living grandmaster of the game. Another proof that mimicking and predicting the human mind is not an easy feat. Not just in the realm of pure math.

I will not go into a comparison of foreign survey companies or the historical records of survey companies like Pulse Asia, Octa Research, or even Social Weather Station for the past 20 years or so. Some are more reliable than others -but most cannot explain the surge on the day of the election – so they use post-election exit surveys -which we cannot verify 100% if this is based on live or ground data or just following the result of the votes counted, or their methods, or their source of answers. We need them to be more transparent in their methods and the raw data they gathered -and I don’t see these organizations doing it willingly in the future.

As in social media platforms -like Google, Facebook, Twitter -there should be legislation to regulate -not ban, the use of election surveys -which is not just about the freedom of the press and the electorate -but is now meant to defeat the sovereign will of citizens -by being brainwashed by the bandwagon effect. Instead of leveling the playing field -these politicians and their public relations experts are weaponizing surveys and statistics against their opponents. We can start by requiring them to publish their questions, methods, identity or at least pictures of their interviewers, sponsors of such surveys – and print in 2-4 major newspapers . So it is not just charts and numbers -but something that all cans scrutinize and learn from it. This will immediately stop the mindless bandwagon effect -since citizens will be using their critical faculties in analyzing the data . Unless this is done -said surveys are just tools to fool our countrymen.

Zuckerberg appears in Congress as Facebook faces bipartisan hostility

And as I said before -2400 or 3000 persons surveyed in our archipelagic nation -will never reflect the will of 55M to 65M voters. If it is true -then why go through the electoral process with its cost? It will be cheaper to just get a survey -and decide on our leaders through it. But you know that this is absurd and mocks the idea of representative government -a republic. Some surveys are being used by those with autocratic or elitist tendencies. They envisioned a society where their kind will know what the mass of people needs and govern accordingly -without their consent or their ideas on how to solve the nation’s problems.

As for the bandwagon effect -yes, we do ask our barangay officials and friends and associates – and we weigh in their answers and advice -but it is not the blind reliance on the pseudo-omniscience of the surveying organizations. We can verify their suggestions based on our experiences in the local situation. Not on supposed achievements created out of thin air or grabbed from others.

Following the majority is not always safe

It is true that we do use surveys -especially for understanding historical trends and hope we can deduce from that -future consumption or preferences of people. This is how producers of hamburgers, laundry powder, soft drinks, beauty soap, or cars use this data in their marketing and their business plans. But it still depends on the type of questions asked, factors considered in the questions, and the source of the data. Mere thousands of people do not reflect the freedom of a million people.

That is why marketing strategies are still not 100 % exact. They do allow a 3-5% margin of error -based on the previous pattern. They are all mental constructs by men trying to have a grasp on the choices of millions of consumers. The better the mind who created the survey and its questions, format, and factors -the better the survey result will be of utility for the marketing company or arm of the manufacturer. We must understand -that many manufacturers do not rely on these marketing surveys in creating their products. They directly ask their customers what they exactly needed.

Some companies use surveys to protect or improve their product and services -so that customers or consumers will have fewer negative experiences and avoid future transfers to their competitors. However -if the surveying company did not make a pre-survey meeting or conference with their client -they might ask the wrong questions or frame them differently which will lead them astray from their intended focus. It can give them interpreted data -that is shallow or clouded.

Marketing research that helps companies to engage productively with heir customers

I am more concerned about the question of the freedom of man and God’s sovereignty over temporal matters. Especially in civil government. It is easy for surveying companies to simplify their questions and thus neglect other factors that citizens of a country consider when voting for their democratic leaders. Most populist politicians hope that they can reduce the competition to a single issue -like drug wars, crimes, labor wages, and similar topics. This is gross manipulation and a marketing ploy so as not to address the multi-faceted problem in nation-building. We need no Messiah -for there is only One. What we need are world-class socio-political managers -that will handle the details of the law, justice, inequities, economics, sustainability, and peace and order in our nation with the help of the local leaders and citizens.

The image that launch the 3-6 months promise of a drug-free Philippines

By the relentless attacks of the politicians and their surveyors on said strategy -the sovereign citizen is dragged as a herd toward a view that does not respect their freedom as image-bearers of God. But even so – it cannot still factor the contingency of the human act -based on many factors, not included, ignored, not known, or even not understood in such strategy. Those who disdain the sovereignty of God tend to manipulate men in their use of their freedom. If they can get them to be emotional or irrational -as long as they choose the ‘good’ that these Pelagians deemed important -it is right for them to use these methods

And this is here where God and His Sovereignty are also ignored. Men will rely on their horses, chariots, and numbers and discount the spontaneity of men and other beings and materials of this universe-which God have decisive control.  God is omniscience and omnipotent. He knows all factors and knows all possibilities and agencies -and He is approachable through the sincerity and faith of humans who believes in His existence, power, and holiness.  Holiness -that men cannot approach on their own -unless they regard the righteous lordship of Jesus Christ. But men and even Christians would like to think that politics and surveys are amoral activities and thus not under the Lordship of Jesus. Math and politics are neutral areas -where their god – ‘science’ (in fact pseudo-science) reigns supreme.

So, should we stop doing surveys? No. there are many uses for them within the limits of understanding of what happened to a representative sampling – of actual historical data -like how many died in the Spanish flu, when it started and how long it took for it to peter away; but assigning omniscience or prophetic or seer’s value to such -is idolatrous and sort-of numerologies similar to those used in masonry or hidden knowledge societies. We must peel away the secrecy of said activity -by having it publish in major dailies with the concurrent information we discussed above ; and limit it for the prudent use of resources of political groups only and not to divert or focus it in brainwashing the masses into a bandwagon mentality by its pre-digested results.

God’s Foreknowledge and Man’s Free Will ?

I have read some part of Dave Hunt’s book -” What Love is this” and read  a part where he says that Luther and Calvin posits that man can never be free since God is omniscient and has foreknowledge -and then tries to argue against it.

scripture-twisting

Though recently deceased -his misrepresentation had affected a lot of people in not considering the truth of God’s eternal election and His subsequent rescue of radically depraved man.

I have not read those part of Luther and Calvin where they said that -but I can be wrong -but that is not the point. My reason for bringing it now is – does Hunt believes that when God created this world/ universe (which is the only one we know – though God can make multi-verses) -does He not know that Man -with his freedom -will not fall into sin -due to the instigation of the Devil?

lucifer2

Or was it possible that the angel Lucifer and the Man -Adam -after being created – and with freedom – will still choose -in their lifetimes to remain holy and righteous? This does not mean that God can only create a imperfect creature – based on our perspective …but is it not part of freedom to be always to be wrong and counter against the standard? Yes -this are speculative questions -but it seems that Hunt’s belief is that the perfect -perfect universe is  that no creature will go against his Creator.

My belief? I believe that God – after making the decision to allow free creatures- fire sees that eventually someone will disobey Him and rebel against Him. It is not a question of if -but of when. So with infinite / multiple simulations in His Mind – He decided that gifting His Son with these people -His Son will make sure that -they will remain in Him until the end -no matter what -so that they will praise His Father -through the Holy Spirit – He -the Son will die for their rebellion -to pay for their sins. This is before time ..and even before the historical creation of Adam at Eden.

Sinner Saved

Eventually  -after the first week -Man will always be seen as not totally free- because of the choice of the first Man -Adam -he will always be in bondage to his sin-nature- but still be able to freed by someone like him. Here will the mystery of election and regeneration and effectual calling and perseverance and eternal security comes into the picture. Though free to be a sinner -his hope is in the eternal transaction of love between the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Only love can rescue him – restore him and make him mature as a son to his heavenly Father.

The devil is not so. Because he was created as an adult/ mature -and with full knowledge -his one time decision fixed his destination to hell. There is no repentance -nor regeneration for him. He will remain as a reminder that freedom and full knowledge is not always to the advantage of the creature. Time and being time-bound is a gift -for us to change and be changed. Asking for something to be like the eternal- is in fact a gift not worth having.

Tithing Again- If not for the fact of existing bondage

Many people training in biblical theology is dismally low since their pastors wanted to protect a doctrine that should have been consigned immediately to Judaizing of Gentile Christianity.

tithing-on-trial

However -since many of these pastors are fearful of their source of income or that they are fearful that the blessings will stop once they comment against such doctrine (specter of elemental spirits hovering)  – they have resorted to allegorization or universalization of a practice that should be confine to Old Testament  times only.

And it pains me to see people that their relationship with the Lord should have raised to an intimacy between a child and his father. Instead we are  back to an OT relationship of a mere master and servant.

True that God owns everything but in the New Covenant -we are co-heirs with Jesus and thus we also own everything including OUR money. Yet we are bound to our husband Jesus in these and His Law.  But we are sons of the King-adopted in Christ.

He gives us a tremendous amount of freedom to realize the real priority/ies in this life- and He wants us to invest in His expanding Kingdom. But this Kingdom only expands willingly and by love -and peace -and by the most free creatures in the universe.

Don’t get me wrong -I believe in supporting the church-its officers and and its ministries. But i don’t believe in a holdup or scam or playing guilt trip when there is no longer an objective standard to back it up or playing with people’s conscience as hostage. In the Days of the Messiah-his followers will come in strength and willingly.  I also believe in the promise of return on investment as spelled out by the Apostle to the Gentiles -Paul in 2 Corinthians 7 to 9.

2010_12 Children of God

So when will other learn that we are sons and daughters of a King and we are also co-heirs with Christ -we must learn to be act s free individuals. And this is one advice coming from a Reformed Christian who believe in a Sovereign Father/God who sent His Son to die willingly for his brothers.

To my Timothy’s

For all those I shared my bible knowledge, insights and theological directions like Gerwin, Teddy, Romy, Samuel, Rovic and others through the years-here are my suggestions -in order that you may still grow and mature in the faith and life:

1. Remain faithful to the Lord Jesus -not how your church tradition or peers conceive him to be-nor other scholars -especially the “historical Jesus” group nor the “high scholasticism Jesus” conceive him to be.

2. Be faithful to the Word of God-but learn first how to understand it-by reading it, understanding its language, historical and cultural milieu and knowing the broad sweep perspective of the whole bible.

3. Use your reason and insights in applying your bible knowledge. Do not forget your common sense -and do not be intimidated by others-in applying what is wrong or right-even if others are no longer living (the great authors of previous years).

4. Use tradition or the voice of the church fathers/reformers/confessions -as long as they retained their secondary status with respect to Scriptures. You must remember Scripture better than your confessionsional standards.

5. Ask advice from almost everybody-even your enemies-maybe they have the right perspective in understanding the truth-you just have to extract it from them. It is true that “whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or the present or the future. Everything belongs to you,23 and you belong to Christ”…

6. Always believe in defending freedom before any human authority. We only bow down before Divine authority-everything else is relative.

7. Always allow room for your own personal or others experience in your search for truth. It is not infallible butu it is also not dispensable. Use and learn how to use it
