Christmas Prayer for LARES

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we gather here today for this occasion, we come before you with grateful hearts.

We thank you for the gift of your Son, Jesus Christ, whose birth we celebrate during this Christmas season. We are reminded of the love and hope that He brings to our lives.

It is said in your Scriptures :

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. – And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us ”

“So when he came into the world, he said, “Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but a body you prepared for me.”

We pray for harmony in our village, that we may come together as a community and support one another. May our interactions be filled with kindness, understanding, and compassion. Help us to embrace the diversity within our neighborhood and create an atmosphere of unity and acceptance.

Lord, we also ask for your peace to be upon our children. Protect them from harm and guide them in the paths of righteousness. May they grow in wisdom and understanding, and may their hearts be filled with joy and love.

We also want to take a moment to express our heartfelt gratitude for the dedicated admin, maintenance staff and security personnel who tirelessly serve our community. They work diligently behind the scenes, ensuring the smooth operation of our neighborhood and the safety of our residents.

We thank you for their commitment, professionalism, and unwavering dedication. Bless them abundantly, Lord, for their hard work and selfless service. May you grant them strength, wisdom, and protection as they carry out their responsibilities. We are truly grateful for their presence in our lives.

Thank you o Lord for the joy, fellowship and the food we will be partaking tonight. May you be our unseen special guest in this gathering tonight – to bless us and grace us with you presence.

Finally, We lift up our families to you oh Lord. We ask for your watchful eye and protection over them during this season. Keep them safe from any harm or danger, and surround them with your love and grace. May this Christmas be a time of joy, laughter, and cherished moments with our loved ones.

In the precious name of our Lord Jesus Christ , we pray. Amen.”

Easter Egg Hunt Opening Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father,

We come before you this afternoon with grateful hearts, thanking you for the opportunity to gather with our precious children. We thank you for this wonderful event that brings us together to celebrate your love and hope.

We also want to thank all the moms, dads, and children in attendance. May you bless them with your love, peace, and joy.

Let us stretch our hand over them…

We want to thank you for the beautiful weather today, and for the safe environment in which our children can participate in this event. We pray that you continue to watch over them and keep them safe throughout the day. May they have so much fun and create lasting memories with their families and friends.

We ask that you bless the activities (and games) that they may create an atmosphere of joy and unity among all who participate.

We pray that children will find happiness in today’s event and experience the warmth of your love.

We are grateful for our HOA President Ruel and BOT Secretary MeAnn Tala, members of the Events Committee the Admin Staff, and all those who have helped make this event possible. May you bless them for their dedication and hard work.

Lord, as symbolized by this event , may we thank you for the hope that you gave us through the resurrection of your son, Jesus Christ. As your word says in John 11:25-26, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die.”

May we always remember the hope and new life that we have in Jesus.

We pray that you bless this event and all those in attendance.
Lord, we ask also for your guidance throughout this event, so that everything will go smoothly, and most importantly, that your name will be glorified.

Opening of Gym 2023

Fellow Homeowners, neighbors:

who are the most important people here today,
guests; ladies and gentlemen.

It is a pleasure to be here today, and I thank you for the opportunity to officially re-open your La Residencia De Starosa Village gym.

I pass on the apologies of the Pres Ruel who unfortunately is unable to attend this inauguration today as his wife has a medical appointment, VP Ric with a sudden business call, Sec Mary Ann Tala -with an early family trek to North of NCR, and Treasurer Ed who is still with his wife at Japan.

The re- opening of your new gym today is a culmination of dream that we can use this new equipment while inside the comfort and protection of our village, near our homes.

Though we are still finalizing the details on how to use it; like the use of the treadmill which needs an AVR or surge suppressor -or maybe a need to hire a fitness trainer, It is best for you to be able use most of it now.

However, your valuable inputs are still welcome for us to properly maintained and benefit from them.

Gyms like these provide a balance in our work-family-personal axis. Feel free to inquire, register and try out this facility and give us your feedback on how we can serve you better. I am sure that this facility will be a wonderful asset for our village – long into the future.

EDSA 1 -People Power -Sign of Divine Intervention

This is hodge podge of Facebook posts -as answer to a question on comparing Israel’s Exodus in Egypt to what we experience at EDSA Revolt of 1986 as a sign of God’s intervention. Later I will clear the narrative -but for now I will just paste all posts here:

-I think you should be more worried on those who wants to bring back the Martial Law years as the good years -we can become a Singapore.? How old … were you in 1983 ? in 1986?

But it is an application of Scripture. Will we then narrow our application to something personal or churchly-and leave out what happens to the naked public square ? Maybe Edsa1 was not salvific as in Exodus or At Calvary. but it is a story of historical liberation from bondage . And to our generation -He did intervene in that history -from the salvation of Ninoy, Colson’s influence on Ninoy-to the non-violent liberation of Feb 25, 1986.

I don’t think my analogy is new. Search thru the (news) archives near the event.

Exodus created a nation wherein before Israel is just a <clan> of Jacob…This did not happen to us Filipinos. But I think you should also look into the historical analogies made by Columbus, the Pilgrims, the 17 states for the Independence of US from Great Britain and the US Civil War. It does not speak of salvation -but of liberation.

And also Cromwell against the Anglicans -and Luther against the Papist.

The Lord our God intervenes in history -not as always clear to us – in all of it..but He does …now we have 30 years to look back and discern His hand on it.

I think …  you are 30+ years old and during 1986 -you are just in elementary and thus you don’t have first hand memory on how brutal and Orwellian that dictatorship is.

Except the God who intervenes in history. Unless we don’t believe that God intervened at Edsa 1 anymore. That is more a triumph of Marcossian origin.

Why now ask the limits in application ? Why ? Is it because I mentioned that those rooting for a Marcos -wannabees like DU30 – is like the Israelites who wants to go back to Egypt and its garlic- affected you ? Maybe it should. Dont worry about Liberation Theology – I am Kuyperian  <Presbyterian/Cromwellian>. The comparison is about bondage ,liberation, Intervention and now those who wants to turn back the time – throwing the gains of freedom and wants the hard taskmasters of Martial Rule.

Like I said …bondage , deliverance by Divine intervention, and then the next generation forgetting this deliverance and wanting to go back to Egypt. Why is it off tangent ? Because the <majority of the> people God used are Catholics? Don’t forget that the period of 1980s was when Born Again Christians boomed…and DZAS was almost chosen as Radyo Bandido and that PCEC Head then Atty. Jun Vencer was much for non-violent protest. I know -I was part of a seminar where the position paper of PCEC was discussed. Evangelicals are weary of politicians with left-leanings are being used by Commnists then-and they should be -i.e. why God used other methods.

Don’t hide your preference for DU30 ….  . You know my preference.. <I am for Mar Roxas> and this is both coloring why you don’t want me to apply that Scripture to this situation -and why I am applying it. And as for Liberation Theology – I am more on the Presbyterian/ Theonomy view of the revolution of the ‘lesser magistrates’ <Calvin’s view in the Institutes> which was used by Cromwell,, the Huguenots, the Americans in their Independence revolution. and Kuyper alliance with Catholics -and Barth’s against Hitler and his Nazis.

The questioner made a reference to :  Martial Law as being constitutional …Martial rule in the Philippines was backed by U.S. in the context of Cold War….we are not even under forced labor- and another made a response -“Martial Law was not constitutional but also absolute. That is why Marcos was a dictator and his reign was also absolute. The then Pres.Marcos suspended the 1935 Constitution, dissolves the Congress and assumed absolute powers and issued Proclamation 1081 imposing Martial Law.” -this response is correct and to add he created another constitution afterwards to consolidate his constitutional parliamentary authoritarianism -where initially Marcos is both President and Prime Minister (eventually it was the technocrat -Cesar Virata became the Prime Minister)

Another made this response : It is not only oppression but of tortures, extra-judicial killings of thousands victims which are documented and incomparable to succeeding presidents after him and worse than Egypt’s force labor…the imposition of Martial Law was unconstitutional because it was done unilaterally and made to look that situations were already chaotic. As Enrile confesses to fake ambush as prelude to martial law…Actually, there were many law luminaries who challenge its constitutionality that time and what Marcos did was to change the 1935 with the new 1973 to legitimize martial law… that is why we have now the 1987 Constitution as that safeguards us from the repeat of martial law regime. That it cannot be done unilaterally anymore but also by Supreme Court and Congress.

From the official Gazette of the Government : After the declaration and imposition of Martial Law, citizens would still go on to challenge the constitutionality of Proclamation No. 1081. Those arrested filed petitions for habeas corpus with the Supreme Court. But Marcos, who had originally announced that Martial Law would not supersede the 1935 Constitution, engineered the replacement of the constitution with a new one. On March 31, 1973, the Supreme Court issued its final decision in Javellana v. Executive Secretary, which essentially validated the 1973 Constitution. This would be the final legitimizing decision with on the constitutionality of Martial Law: in G.R. No. L-35546 September 17, 1974, the Supreme Court dismissed petitions for habeas corpus by ruling that Martial Law was a political question beyond the jurisdiction of the court; and that, furthermore, the court had already deemed the 1973 Constitution in full force and effect, replacing the 1935 Constitution.

The questioner mentioned something – that I am seeing more than their weak and feeble eyes can see …and he implied that my application is not the faithful reading and application of a text -so my response is – As you can see your analysis also betrays your bias on reading our historical context and the text itself.

And in our FB message – ….  I can back down now. Forget it .politics and hermeneutics are incendiary ingredients. But we do need a framework to use. But i don’t know anyone who has it now . We are too close to the issues. I don’t discuss my political applications n in the pulpit like when in the time of Erap and Eddie Villanueva .I do make it known though in the blogs and social media.I am not a pastor nor an officer in any local church anymore.

Then I mentioned my rule in applying Scriptures in past concrete historical situation – And I still stand that throughout church history – Christians applied the Exodus deliverance motif to their concrete situation and were rewarded by the intervention of God. Applications does not required that every detail of the original redemptive -historical revelation-event should be there.

It does not mean that every action and motives in the historical situation be legitimate or sacro-sanctum – but it only need to be in consonance to general motif of the original revelation. I don’t believe in agnosticism or conservatism in application to historical situation especially when so many other witnesses or observers points in the historical situation -to be signs of God’s intervention.

 

 

 

 

The Procedure – Colonoscopy

The day started with me having a breakfast of champorado since I have to a light soft diet for my colonoscopy. I really did not have a restful sleep -not that I am scared of the procedure since I have done it last April, 2013 -but what Dra Pena mentioned last November confinement- She was trying to rule out any cancerous growth.

Mabel and I went to Cardinal Santos Hospital last Friday -January 24, 2014. We left home by 1 PM after Mabel accompanied Madel and her grandson- Jello -to have his antibiotics shot. We rode an aircon Cher bus and was seated right behind the bus driver. after 1 1/2 hours we alighted at Megamall Bus terminal.

There we walk towards the taxi stand at the side of Megamall for our ride to the hospital.

Since I already have the LOA-Letter of authorization for my overnight admittance- after some 10-20 minutes- I was assigned room 512 and was assisted by the porter to the room. There the on-shift nurses introduced themselves and acquaint me of the welcome kit. My vitals were taken and the resident doctor interviewed me of my medical history leading to this colonoscopy. Now I know why my nother brings a lot of paper in the hospital so that she did not have to repeat the previous diagnosis and prognosis again and again to the medical staff.

By 8PM – I was given one bottle of laxative- too sweet and too thick..after an hour or so -my stomach is feeling the revolution within. By 10 PM -I was also given two tablets and Dulcolax-and was prevented to take any fluids or solids by 12 midnight. By 2 Pm -I was already in or out of the CR 5 times and so very weak by then-good that I was at the hospital because I already have IV by 12 midnight. every 4 hours the nurse takes my sugar level which are all okay the whole time. By 5:30 AM – I was pricked in my anus with Barium Enema-and the nurse told me to hold on by 10 to 15 minutes before going again to the CR. By this time -I am already spent and have nothing anymore to give 🙂

By 6 AM I was driven by wheelchair towards the endoscopy unit with Mabel. I was transferred to a small bed and raised to a level convenient for the doctors to do the procedure. Mabel prayed for me before I was whisked to the procedure room and she was told to go outside of the unit.

Operating and laboratory rooms inside hospital are using cold and patients isolated and quarantine away from their love ones. But in prioritizing safety- they isolate us from those who can sustain us during such procedures.

The nurses introduced themselves , then the assistant to the anesthesiologist and my doctor , then the technician who adjust the coldness of the room -and setup the computers and the screen for the procedure. It was bright and cold there..and they put an oxygen tube in  my nose, blood pressure monitor on my right a heart rate clamp and some 4 ECG like suctions in my chest.

Then Dra Peña and Dr Rivera came and talked to me and after I was told to lay on my left side- I fell asleep.

I woke up in the recovery section and told my procedure was over. AFter a while -with my wife , Dra Valera me that there was nothing new except for the presence of more than 3 diverticulas and that I need to eat more fiber-rich foods and meet her again by MArch 4, 2014. After that I went back to my room to change and have my IV and billings processed. So by 10AM Saturday -January 25, 2014-I was out of the hospital. The company incurred 15K pesos -less Philhealth and company’s discount-for my procedure.

Raviel- my youngest son…with our rented AUV …fetched us from the hospital. We passed by Greenhills for more or less 30 minutes before going home to San Pedro, Laguna

A Wedding Prayer-December 29, 2012

My brother-in-law -asked me to pray before the reception during their wedding day-unfortunately -I was downed by UTI -and my wife Mabelle read this for me the Tagalog stanza is a translation of the English words  in brackets:

A Wedding Prayer

Sa Ngalan ng Ama, Anak at Espiritu Santo

Mapagpalang Ama at kataastaasang Diyos

Kami po ay magkakasama ngayon

Upang ipagdiwang ang pagibig at pag-iisa

Nila Joseph at Lani

(Ever present Lord and loving Father

To celebrate the love and commitment

A Prayer of Thanksgiving and Dedication

I was assigned last Saturday to lead the prayers for the End-of-the Year Townhall Meeting-and I was inspired to write this prayer-which is a sort-of concatenation of traditional and contemporary prayers and passages from the Psalms, Corinthians and Ephesians and intersperse with my thoughts adjusted for our situation :

Father, all powerful and ever-living God, -Source of All Blessing, we desire your presence here today.

God our Father,
fountain and source of our salvation,
may we proclaim your glory every day of our lives,

For you, O LORD, are most high over all the earth;

you are exalted far above all gods.

Oh Lord – we place ourselves—the men and women of Corporate Business Group-  in your presence to celebrate the achievements of the past year.

As we gather, we are remember the words of your Apostle Paul:

There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord.  There are different kinds of working, but the same God works in all of … Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit in these various gifts is given for the common good. (I. Cor. 12: 4-7).

We celebrate the capacity for creativity, for critical thinking, for focused effort of our friends and colleagues.

For the Open-hearted guidance and encouragement of our leaders – We know that -You, O God, are the source of inspiration, the spark that urges us all on to excellence-whether we acknowledge it or not.

We also thank you for our families and friends that offer emotional and spiritual support.

For the brief time today of fellowship and nourishment –May your Spirit sustains and enlivens us .

O God, you sustain all of us at every moment, as we work and worry, and as we rejoice and celebrate!   As we celebrate them today, we ask that you bless and guide our lives.

We continue to pray that we may use our many gifts of intellect, heart, and soul to address the challenges our company – Yes even our countrymen- as we bring a better present and a better future worthy of your coming kingdom.

I will give thanks to you, O Lord, among the peoples;

I will sing praises to you among the nations.

For your steadfast love is great to the heavens,

Treasures on earth

Matthew 6: 19-21  “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

I am self-confessed bibliomaniac or bookworm. When I was young -grade school to high school age- I always frequent my friend’s house (Junjun Sarreal) so I can read their Encyclopedia Britannica where Junjun was famous for quoting their content and their copies of Time and Newsweek magazines- and borrow some of them home-where I spend time pouring on stories of Nixon, Carter and Reagan during the summer days. I also borrow the bible story book, world history and Old Baltimore catechism from the house of Ongsu’s at Instruccion Street, Sampaloc, Manila-where books on English literature and the biography of John F. Kennedy can be found. They were my treasured –borrowed possession.

And so –now that I have my own financial resources –and the glut of trade books and imported second-hand books here in the Philippines- plus the ease of buying online form Amazon and other Christian publishing houses- I now have three steel bookshelves and 4  plastic case of books-these without including the pdf, epubs, lits, djvu and cbzs I have downloaded online in my 500 GB portable hard disk.

This Christmas holiday – I went through my hardcopy collection and found out-to my dismay that my wood bookshelf is infested with termites –and it started gnawing at the top shelf-not below where I am anticipating if ever there is a termite in the area. And I thought our house is concrete-and impervious to them. But termites has a nasty way of entering to the grooves and cleavages of the floor panels and then going through the lower levels of the bookshelf and then destroying the books. Fortunately – it was the Star Wars books and some old management books that I already read or really leave out that it started to destroy.

So it took me three weeks to unload the books, throw out the bookshelf and other items I really don’t need at all or anymore, locate and install the new two steel shelves and reload the books. And I still need to rearrange it again based on my reading habits and needs. I also took all of the magazines that I have pdf copies and gave it to one of my disciple-friend- Elder Romy dela Cruz so that he can use it as background reading in theology and general matters. I previously gave away 2 years worth of the Banner magazine of CRCNA to CRC San Pedro, Laguna for their use.

During one of my rearranging time and resorting time –based on the 5S principle of –seiri, seiton, seiso,seiketsu, and shitsuke – I have to throw away items that I did not even use once in 5 years-but it seems impractical to do so since most books are hard to look for and come by-so it still remain with me-even though I have read it before. I might not read “Lord of the Rings” trilogy anymore since the movie-but it reminds me of my college years when I started reading it through a copy of Junjun Sarreal. I said to myself- I have to leave books that will define my personality, character, interest and legacy-and I hope they-my children –and my disciples in Christ-will at least peek and pore at the pages after. They may have their portable viewers later-but nothing beats the friendship of the printed page-when you feel the roughness or texture of the pages and are able to hold it without the fear of dropping it and destroying it.

But still-other have books and items must go- with termites in its pages-it has to go-so as not to contaminate others- there goes the initials books on the Yuuzhan Vong (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Yuuzhan_Vong) invasion where Chewbacca died to save the Solo’s children-then some old theories in management that I never understand –like matrix organization (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matrix_management), and there are the small electronic parts that I thought that I will be using later for some projects or repairs , and items from previous IIEE conventions and seminars. I hold onto them for remembrance- but I hardly remember anything about them at all-so it must go too. My deep regret is I lost the book of William Safire-“Freedom” to the termites. There I understood how ethically nuance the issues about the American Civil War and that Lincoln is not that bland personality- he is too human-and yet he was a good leader for their time. First time to read there also about General McClellan and Robert Lee. I was not able to finish it-since the noted alone are tremendous and scholarly important with regards to the issues discussed in the book.

And so as we grow old –other things must be left behind-others must be discarded –I just hope that what remains –is taken by the next generation for their own journey-in faith- through time.

I Smell Something Fishy Here

Are they ganging up against Supreme Court Chief Justice Sereno?

“Senator Joker Arroyo hopes Chief Justice Lourdes Sereno will not mistake “God’s will” for infallibility… After the Chief Justice expressed her belief that she was anointed by the Good Lord as chief magistrate, I hope she would not think she has now the infallibility in her judicial opinions,” Arroyo said, tongue-in-cheek.”

“Jose Mejia, a member of the 8-member body, told reporters on Monday, September 3, that the body will probe how the results of the psychological tests – which were supposed to be confidential – were disclosed to others. The Manila Times earlier reported that Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno and Solicitor General Francis Jardeleza got a grade of 4 in the tests. A grade of 5 means failure.

The newspaper quoted from the supposed results of the report, which described Sereno as someone who “projects a happy mood but has depressive markers too. There is a strong tendency to make decisions based on current mood thus, outcome is highly subjective and self-righteous.”

My take:

Did President Noynoy railroad many hopes of private individuals or companies when their champion ( 5-6 Senior SC Judges) was not chosen by the president?
